You’re going to love this Meaty Brown Sugar Sloppy Joes recipe. I’m one of those folks that like my sloppy joes to be meaty, hearty, and full of flavor. I used to only buy the kind that comes in a can, mostly because the flavor was always the same and it was easy until I perfected my own recipe for this traditional American meal.
The amount of brown sugar is the not-so-secret ingredient to this meal and is a nice compliment to all the other flavors. Want a Texan twist to this classic American dish? Add pickled jalapeno slices to the sauce or directly to your sandwich if your other family members don’t agree.
I used Mrs Baird’s new Grillin’ Thins as the bun for my sloppy joes. Mrs Baird’s Grillin’ Thins comes in your choice of 100% Whole Grain and White. Each Mrs Baird’s Grillin’ Thins 100% Whole Grain bun contains just 100 calories, 19 grams of Whole Grain, is an excellent source of fiber, and there’s NO high fructose corn syrup! Yes, Mrs Baird’s sent me the Grillin’ Thins to try out for myself, but the recipe for Meaty Brown Sugar Sloppy Joes is completely mine and takes only 15 minutes to prepare. Enjoy!
Meaty Brown Sugar Sloppy Joes
- 1 pound ground hamburger 90/10
- 1 small onion, diced
- 1 bell pepper (any color), diced
- 2 roma tomatoes, diced
- 3 T ketchup
- 2 eight oz cans tomato sauce
- 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
- salt and pepper, to taste
- slices of pickled (canned) jalapenos, optional
Over medium high heat, brown the ground hamburger until just a little pink remains, then drain off excess fat. Do NOT rinse! Return to skillet and add onions and bell pepper. Continue cooking until onions are translucent and no pink remains in the ground hamburger. Lower heat to medium.
Add remaining ingredients, stirring occasionally, for about ten minutes. Serve on either traditional hamburger buns or on Mrs Baird’s Grillin’ Thins buns. Serves eight.
